nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist polls. do you get any sense of strategy from the mitt romney camp that might break through or do you think they're waiting for wednesday night and the debates to begin? >> the problem is they promised several times to reset the campaign and then reset the reset. but we've seen in the past three weeks since the national conventions have ended there really hasn't been that much of a shift in strategy when it comes to the time that the republican ticket has spent in the top three battleground states of ohio, florida, and virginia. the obama ticket is actually outperforming them in those states. they've held about 29 events in that period compared to about 24 for the republicans. so, while there's a lot of calls for romney and paul ryan to be hitting the trail a little bit more, and to be doing a little bit less fund-raising, you're seeing exactly the opposite happening on the ground. so mitt romney spent yesterday in pennsylvania. that was not exactly a battleground state. they're not even running ads there right now. so it's a little bit of a hea

presidential election, new swing state polls show that the secretly recorded tape revealing mitt romney's intention to abandon 37% of the american people if elected president is actually having the effect you would expect. romney's secretly recorded words are crushing his campaign. a new poll shows president obama running ten points ahead of mitt romney in ohio, which is where abc news found mitt romney tonight and confronted him about the heavy words he dropped on 47% of the american people. >> about the people you said you couldn't convince to take greater responsibility. those are heavy words. >> what i'm talking about is a political process. i don't expect to get 100% of the vote. i hope to get 50-plus % and make sure i get the next president. >> that was his answer to the worst possible thing he could have said in his campaign, that was the best he could respond with. notice that no where in that answer does mitt romney attempt to actually repair the damage of his secretly recorded words. he simply says i'm just trying to get more than 50% of the vote. no word of explanation. no atte

. >> get in, get out. new polling is showing mitt romney has narrowed the gap. good news for him. in the last two weeks and your tips, you said the governor needs to show passion for the country and it people. what does he say to voters to do that because there is still the sting from that 47% remark that people are not walking away from that is resognating. >> one of the things we often had conversations with rick santorum about. he had no lack of passion on the stage. one of the things he did was leave everybody in a negative tone. with the statistics of where we are now. unemployment being high and poverty being high. and then just walk off and say thanks, everybody. we kept trying to explain to him, you have to turn around and uplift the country and say, but we don't have to be here. we don't have to be falling away from the rest of the world. we can be the leader in this world and that's what mitt romney has to do. he can't overstep. overswing here. to continue on the sports metaphors as you started with, but he has to line out a vision for the country. and one thing he hasn't b

2008. polls in the past two weeks showing the president leading romney anywhere from five to eight points. but the president is taking nothing for granted, out today with a devastating new ad, and all in mitt romney's own words. >> i'm barack obama and i approve this message. >> there are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they're victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe they're entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it. and they will vote for this president no matter what. and so my job is not to worry about those people. i'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility. >> that absolutely brutal punch in the gut will be airing in ohio, virginia, florida, colorado, nevada, new hampshire, and iowa, where, by the way, early voting starts today. trying to minimize the impact of his own callous comments, romney has his own new ad out talking straight to the camera. >> too many americans are struggling to find work in today

%, according to all polling, has really crushed romney. the latest poll shows 45% of americans said it gave them a more negative view of romney. now the polls show 55% had a negative reaction. so he has to deal with it if it comes up and it's likely to come up. you heard cynthia say that he's had to have some kind of answer and he's had to have an answer. >> his campaign had said earlier that, yes, they absolutely do expect to have things come up and yes they will be ready. one of the things that we keep hearing him say on the campaign trail is that he cares about 100% of americans but the real way we pekts them to diffuse is that he and president obama both care about all americans to say that they are on the same pain. that's the way that he will likely deal with it, that they both care about everyone. >> now, let me go back to you, cynthia. cynthia, let me give you a lot of people that are conservative that are giving advice to mr. romney. peg knee noonan says, tell romney to treat the president with represent and not different. newt gingrich says be on offense without being offensive. d

still surviving the 2012 presidential campaign so far. a poll in "usa today" finds that 18% of romney supporters and 24% of those who say they back president obama could still change their mind based on what happens in the debates. >>> and according to pugh research, more than six in ten voters are likely to watch the debate tonight. a majority, 51% to 29% think that president obama will do better than mitt romney. >>> rocker jon bon jovi is busy this week doing performances to support president obama. he has two appearances in iowa on friday. las vegas on saturday and on sunday he's going to perform at an obama fund raiser with stevie wonder and katie peri. this always sells. the web side bat lip reading is choosing paul ryan for its next victim after previous satires of president obama and mitt romney. they reworked a ryan video substituting different bizarre words as only bad lip reading could do. take a listen. >> i went into a starbucks building and everyone started collapsing. and i went to steve-o. he said he slipped into the future. he said ask about the special because it's d

particularly polls. mitt romney, conservatives are waiting for him to be big in events, big in message, big in personality. it seems like right now the campaign is waiting for him to do that in the debates. >> mark, you know why they focus on process, because there's not substance to -- you know, it's funny, in 1988 facing a more hostile press george h.w. bush never once whined about process. you know why? because james baker told the press what they were going to be following. and he told the candidate what he was going to be doing. and every week the candidate did it. the message was unbelievable. but again, going on with charles krauthammer, for six months mitt has been matching obama small ball for small ball. a hit-and-run critique here. this is important. a hit-and-run critique here, a slogan of the week there. that's what we've been saying. sam stein, there is no over arching message, no reagan message, no thatcher message, no george h.w. bush message in 1988. it's small ball. you have a libyan embassy blow up. you push him out the next morning and do something that even the romney c

romney in his handling of the economy in all three states. 51% of polled voters say the president would do the better job. >> okay, let's go back to the last slide, guys. and mark halperin, let's talk to you. i know you agree with me that the media is liberal. guess what? republicans have somehow managed to win despite that media liberal bias. you've said it repeatedly on this show. so despite that fact, mitt romney is not getting crushed in all three of these states because of the liberal media bias. what's happening there, and why is he losing so badly, especially in ohio? >> well, it's very unlikely the president will win those states by those margins, but these numbers are not out of line dramatically with private polling and some other public polling. i think the biggest problem right now remains him. he's not driving a consistent message. the president does -- says something, the republicans get all excited about it. they treat it like a gaffe. they'll talk about it for a day. and then they'll move on to something else. the biggest danger to me right now for the republican p

voters don't seem to like it much. and a new fox news poll, yes, fox news poll, shows romney trailing nationally by five points. and get this, he has a lower favorable rating than george w. bush. don't adjust your tv set. mr. romney is less liked than bush. huh? maybe that's something to do with the fact that he can't seem to answer basic questions. >> how was that? >> i have nothing. >> guys, here we go. >> guys -- it's just -- all we've got here is beef jerky? who here wants a piece of beef jerky? that's all i've got. this was given to us by jack link. >> what do you have planned for the weekend? >> anyone else? >> governor romney, they were asking about the debates, about the israeli prime minister, not about beef jerky. now, romney did answer questions from reporters later. but this is what he's done issue after issue, dodge questions and hide behind the mask. but i've got news for mr. romney. the obama campaign is hammering home who the real romney is and what he stands for. he's a candidate who has no problem writing off the country, something that this president refuses to do.

president and mitt romney will be both in in virginia as the polls increasingly favor the president and the calendar is mitt romney's nemesis. just six days until the first debate. 40 days until the election. the president stumps in virginia beach today while romney is in springfield. those swing state polls show mitt romney down. and his campaign is now reserved another $3.4 million in ad time in those crucial states, including $1.5 million for virginia. but it's ohio's numbers that are raising a lot of eyebrows today. the president hinted at the 47% video there that's been so devastate for his opponent. >> i have spent a lot of time in ohio, and i don't meet a lot of victories. i see a lot of hard work in ohio ans. >> "new york times" political analyst nate silver calculates that mitt romney's chance of winning ohio is 3.6%. as we've been tell you, no republican has won the white house without it. >>> despite the polls piling up against him mitt romney insists he can win. >> i believe in america, and i believe in you. i believe you're going to help me win ohio, i'll tell you that.
